What is Ecodesign?
The You may have heard the term “Ecodesign” mentioned time and time again when shopping for a stove. Here we try and break this term down to help you understand just what the standard is, and what it means for you.
Ecodesign Regulations establish new minimum seasonal efficiency standards and maximum emission thresholds for solid fuel-burning room heater stoves, room heater stoves equipped with boilers, and cooking appliances. Only those devices that have undergone testing and have been confirmed to comply with these new standards will be permitted for sale. The emission thresholds encompass limits for Particulate Matter (PM), Organic Gaseous Compounds (OGC), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx).
What are the current efficiency and emission standards for solid fuel appliances?
At present, solid fuel appliances intended for sale in the UK market must achieve a minimum gross efficiency of 65% when operating at the nominal heat output, as outlined in the existing UK Building Regulation requirements.
This measure is designed to ensure that the installation of any new or replacement solid fuel appliance does not significantly compromise the overall energy efficiency and performance of the property. For pellet room heater appliances, this efficiency requirement is raised to 70%, primarily due to the enhanced controllability associated with pellet-burning systems.
The only emission performance standards for these appliances are defined by the Construction Products Regulations, which currently set a maximum emission limit for CO at 12,500 mg/m³. Present manufacturing standards do not currently impose maximum emission requirements for PM, OGCs, or NOx.
